I am trying to file a married filing jointly tax return for a military taxpayer who is a GA resident and whose spouse is a KS resident. My in-laws moved from Maine to Massachusetts in July 2017 but maintained ownership of their former residence in Maine until 2018. They spent more than 183 days in Maine during the tax year and maintained a 'permanent place of abode' in Maine. Should they be considered 'statutory residents' of Maine, and if so, do they need to pay taxes for the full year in Maine and also in Massachusetts from July forward?

My mother passed away in November 2017, and her estate was divided among her three children. Two sisters received an additional sum of approximately 150 thousand, which they agreed to gift half to me. One sister now wants me to pay her 11K to cover taxes she says she owes in Oregon and to the IRS. I live in California and am concerned about potential tax liabilities for the gifted amount. What are my tax responsibilities, and can my sister deduct the gifted amount from her taxes?
