We own a triplex; we occupy the downstairs and there are 2 apartments upstairs. In 2015 we paid for repairs caused by water damage in an upstairs apartment. While at it, we had the entire apartment repainted. Several months after the work was done we claimed for those damages from our insurance company, and received a portion of the total cost. Can we claim all of these expenses, and if so, do we have to report the insurance money?

My husband and I are expats in South Korea. We requested Certification of Residency and received Forms 6166, but did not submit them to any foreign authority. We were still living in the US for the first two months of January 2015, and taxes were already withheld as we were both W2 employees. Now, we need to file our taxes as we were both self-employed once we moved overseas. I want to claim the foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign housing exclusion on our tax return. However, I'm concerned that using the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) might trigger an audit since we requested Form 6166, which we didn't submit to foreign tax authorities. Will this cause issues with the IRS, and should we still pay full self-employment taxes on our foreign income?

If I have a small business and filed taxes as a sole proprietor but my receipts are under $5,000, can my client claim that I'm a non-profit? They say I represented myself as a non-profit, but nothing in my business states that. They are asking for my financials, and I refuse to give them. Am I a small business or a non-profit?

I owe taxes for 2014 and 2015. I see ads for tax negotiating companies on TV. Are these companies legitimate? Does the IRS negotiate taxes down? If so, can I do this on my own or do I need a tax attorney or one of these tax negotiating companies?

My wife and I own a townhouse that we rent to my in-laws. We are going to create a life estate to give them the right to stay in that home for life. They are going to pay $100,000 for the life estate. Does that constitute income to us? When they die the townhouse reverts back to us. If we sell it then do we have to add the $100,000 as capital gains?
