My partner and I are trying to decide if we should get married or become domestic partners in California. We understand that domestic partners are not treated as married on the federal level, allowing us to have our own $10,000 of state and local income, sales, and property taxes instead of $5,000 each as married filing separately. On the state level, we will be treated as married. We want to know if there are other major differences in tax between domestic partnership and marriage, and how these differences apply at both federal and state levels.
