My Kenmore front-loading washer, which is 6 years old, won't start and the light next to the lock symbol is on. I have tried turning off the power, waiting, turning it back on, playing with the controls, and firmly closing the door. What should I do?

I have a Maytag electric dryer (model number MEDC465HW0) that is running but not heating. I checked the heater element and thermostats, and they all have continuity. The fuse has continuity, but the thermostat next to the fuse does not. This thermostat has 4 wires connecting to it, with 2 red and 2 purple wires. Did I check this part correctly? How can I check it?
