As a caregiver for a 90-year-old client who is of sound mind and lives independently, I have received financial assistance and a car as a gift from him. The bank reported possible exploitation to Adult Protective Services (APS), who questioned my client and are now investigating. Can APS disregard his clear mental state and proceed with an investigation? What is the process of this investigation, and when will I be notified if there is one? As a professional caregiver, was it wrong for me to accept these gifts and financial assistance?
